Choosing glass and mirrors
Types of glass
- Toughened (tempered) glass: several times stronger than ordinary glass and breaks into small blunt pieces. Used for shower enclosures, doors, railings and tabletops. It cannot be cut or drilled after toughening, so sizes must be exact.
- Laminated glass: two layers bonded with a film that holds pieces together if broken. Used for skylights, railings and security.
- Frosted and patterned glass: privacy for bathrooms and partitions.
- Reflective and tinted glass: reduces heat and glare on sun-facing facades.
Shower enclosures and partitions
- Always use toughened glass of a suitable thickness
- Check the hardware: hinges, handles and clamps should be stainless steel
- Ask how joints are sealed against leaks
Mirrors
Ask for polished edges, moisture-resistant backing in bathrooms, and safe fixing. Backlit LED mirrors need a planned power point.

Questions about glass & mirrors
What glass should be used for a shower enclosure?
Toughened glass, which is far stronger and breaks into small blunt pieces if it ever breaks.
Can toughened glass be cut after delivery?
No. It must be cut and drilled before toughening, so measurements must be exact.
Why do bathroom mirrors develop black edges?
Moisture attacks the silver backing. Moisture-resistant mirrors and sealed edges last longer.
Does tinted glass reduce heat?
Tinted and reflective glass reduce solar heat and glare, especially on sun-facing windows.
