Choosing paint and finishes
A good paint job depends as much on preparation as on the paint itself.
Common paint types
- Emulsion (water-based): for interior walls and ceilings. Matte hides imperfections; silk and sheen finishes are easier to wipe.
- Weather-proof exterior paint: for outside walls, made to handle sun and rain.
- Enamel (oil-based): for wood, metal grills and doors.
- Textures and special finishes: for feature walls and exteriors.
- Wood polish and lacquer: for doors, furniture and panelling.
Preparation that makes paint last
- Fix seepage and cracks first; paint cannot stop water from behind
- Scrape loose paint, fill holes and sand smooth
- Apply wall putty where needed and a suitable primer
- Apply at least two coats of the finish paint

Questions about paint & wall finishes
Why does new paint bubble and peel?
Usually because of moisture in the wall or poor preparation. Fix seepage, let the wall dry, and use the right primer.
How often should a house be repainted?
Interiors often every few years, depending on wear. Exterior paint lasts longer when good weather-proof paint is applied over sound plaster.
Matte or glossy paint for walls?
Matte hides imperfections and suits most rooms. Sheen finishes are easier to wipe and suit kitchens, bathrooms and children's rooms.
Can I paint over wallpaper or panels?
It is rarely a good idea. Remove wallpaper first, and choose panel colours at the start.
