Choosing tiles

Tiles last for decades, so it pays to choose the right type for each room.

  • Porcelain is dense, hard and absorbs very little water: ideal for floors, including busy areas.
  • Ceramic is lighter and easier to cut: ideal for walls, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Matte or anti-slip finishes are safer for bathroom floors, wash areas, stairs and terraces.
  • Glossy finishes brighten walls but show dust and can be slippery on floors.

Showroom checks

  • Make sure every box carries the same batch and shade number
  • Order about 10 percent extra, and keep a few spares for future repairs
  • Place two tiles face to face to check they are flat
  • Ask whether outdoor tiles are rated for outdoor use

Fixing matters as much as the tile

Large tiles need a flat base, proper tile adhesive and a skilled fixer. Bathroom floors need waterproofing and a slope to the drain. Stain-resistant or epoxy grout keeps kitchens and bathrooms looking clean far longer.

Questions about tiles & ceramics

Are porcelain tiles better than ceramic?

For floors, usually yes, because porcelain is harder and absorbs less water. Ceramic is perfectly good for walls and costs less.

Which tiles are best for a bathroom floor?

Matte or anti-slip porcelain tiles. Smaller tiles also help water drain towards the floor drain.

Why do floor tiles crack?

Common causes are hollow spots under the tile, a moving base, or no expansion gaps in large areas. Good fixing prevents most cracks.

How many extra tiles should I buy?

Around 10 percent for straight layouts, more for diagonal patterns, plus a few spares for future repairs.
