Choosing wood-look flooring

Laminate, SPC and vinyl can look almost identical, but they react very differently to water and humidity.

TypeWaterBest for
LaminateSplash resistant only; can swell if water gets inDry bedrooms, lounges and offices
SPCWaterproof, rigid and stableAlmost any indoor room, including kitchens
Vinyl (LVT or sheet)Waterproof, flexibleKitchens, kids' rooms, clinics; needs a very flat base
Engineered woodReal wood top layer; keep dryPremium living spaces

In humid cities like Karachi, and on ground floors, SPC and vinyl are the safer choices.

What to check

  • For laminate, the AC wear rating and board thickness
  • For SPC and vinyl, the wear layer thickness in millimetres
  • Whether underlay, skirting and door trims are included
  • That all boxes come from the same batch

Any damp in the floor slab must be fixed first, or it will damage the floor and cause mould underneath.

Questions about wooden & vinyl flooring

Is laminate flooring waterproof?

No. It resists splashes, but water getting into joints can make it swell. SPC and vinyl are waterproof.

Can new flooring go over my existing tiles?

Usually yes for laminate and SPC, if the old floor is solid and flat. Vinyl may need deep grout lines filled first.

Which flooring is best for Karachi's humidity?

SPC and vinyl handle humidity much better than laminate, especially on ground floors.

Can wood-look floors go in bathrooms?

It is best to use tiles in bathrooms, as even waterproof planks are not designed for standing water.
