Wall panels have become the quickest way to change a room in Pakistan. A plain TV wall becomes a feature, a damp-stained bedroom wall disappears behind a clean finish, and the whole job is often done in a day. But walk into any panel shop on Shahrah-e-Faisal or Hall Road and you will hear two words again and again: WPC and PVC. They look similar on the shelf, yet they behave very differently once they are on your wall.
This guide explains the difference in plain language, which one suits which room, and what to check before you pay.
What WPC and PVC panels actually are
WPC (wood plastic composite) panels are made from wood fibre or wood powder mixed with plastic. The result is a dense, rigid panel that feels closer to timber. Most fluted panels you see on TV walls and in restaurants are WPC.
PVC panels are made from polyvinyl chloride, usually with a light foam or hollow core. They are lighter, cheaper and fully waterproof, which is why they are common in bathrooms, kitchens and ceilings.
Side-by-side comparison
| WPC panels | PVC panels | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel and look | Solid, wood-like, deeper fluting | Lighter, can look flatter up close |
| Water and humidity | Water resistant | Fully waterproof |
| Termites | Resistant | Resistant |
| Strength | Harder to dent, holds screws well | Can dent or crack if knocked |
| Weight | Heavier | Light, easy to fit on ceilings |
| Price | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| Best for | TV walls, lounges, bedrooms, offices, shops | Bathrooms, kitchens, ceilings, rental flats |
Which one should you choose for each room?
Lounge and TV wall
WPC is the usual choice. The deeper fluting catches light well, the panel feels solid when you touch it, and it can carry the weight of shelves or a wall-mounted TV bracket fixed through to the wall behind. Plan your TV wiring and any LED strip lighting before installation, because hiding cables afterwards means removing panels.
Bedroom
Either works. WPC gives a warmer, more premium headboard wall. PVC is fine if you are on a tighter budget or renting.
Bathroom and kitchen
PVC is the safer choice in wet areas because it is fully waterproof. Keep panels away from direct heat such as stoves and geysers.
Ceilings
PVC is lighter, which makes ceilings easier and safer to fit. For a wood-look ceiling in a lounge, lightweight WPC strips on a proper frame also work.
Shops, cafes and offices
WPC handles knocks and daily wear better, which matters in busy spaces.
Pakistani conditions to think about
Fix seepage first. Panels hide damp walls, they do not cure them. If a wall has seepage, the moisture stays trapped behind the panel and keeps damaging the plaster, and in time the adhesive can fail. Get the source treated by a waterproofing specialist first.
Heat and sunlight. In Karachi, Lahore and Multan summers, cheaper panels on walls that get strong direct sun can fade or move. Ask the supplier whether the product is suitable for walls that get afternoon sun, and make sure the installer leaves small expansion gaps at the edges.
Fire safety. Neither material is fireproof by default. For commercial spaces, ask whether the product has a fire rating and ask to see the paperwork.
Checks before you buy
- Thickness and density. Ask for the thickness in millimetres and compare samples by weight. A thin, very light panel at a low price is usually low density.
- Surface finish. Scratch a sample lightly with a key. Good laminated or coated finishes should not mark easily.
- Same batch. Colours vary between production batches. Buy everything for one wall in one order.
- Order extra. Add around 10 percent for cutting and wastage.
- Matching trims. End caps, corner pieces and skirting in the same colour make the difference between a neat finish and an obvious DIY job.
- Installation method. Ask whether they fix to wooden battens, metal frames, clips or adhesive. Battens or frames make it easier to run wiring and handle uneven walls.
Questions to ask the supplier
- Is this WPC or PVC, and what is the thickness?
- Is the price per panel, per running foot or per square foot, and does it include installation and trims?
- Is it suitable for a wall that gets direct sunlight?
- What warranty do you give on the panel and on the installation?
- Can I see a wall you have installed in the last year?
Frequently asked questions
Can wall panels be installed on a wall with seepage?
They can be, but they should not be. Treat the seepage first, let the wall dry, then install. Otherwise the damage continues out of sight.
How long do wall panels last?
Good quality panels installed on a dry, sound wall indoors can last many years. Lifespan depends far more on quality, installation and moisture than on the WPC or PVC label.
Can I paint WPC or PVC panels?
It is possible with the right primer, but the factory finish usually looks and lasts better. Choose the colour you want at the start.
Are panels cheaper than paint or wallpaper?
Usually not for a whole room. Panels make most sense for a feature wall, a damaged wall, or an area that takes heavy wear.
